P6 STEM Outreach Project
Primary 6 had a great morning with Mr. Johnston from Cookstown High School. They were participating in a STEM and Engineering Project, an outreach initiative designed specifically for Primary 6 pupils. This project is funded by the Cookstown Enterprise Centre and aims to spark curiosity and engagement in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) through hands-on activities, teamwork, and problem-solving.
They had to work in groups to discover how strong they could make a strip of paper - this was then tested by placing heavy weights, a pupil and even Mrs. Allen on the paper to test how successful they had been.
Their second task was to design a tower to support an egg. There were many things which had to be considered in their designs. Height, stability and safety of egg were all tested. Mr. Johnson then used AI to judge the creativity and appearance of the children's designs.
They all thoroughly enjoyed this experience and they have learned a lot about structures and engineering designs. Many thanks to Mr. Johnston, Cookstown High School and Cookstown Enterprise Centre for offering us this opportunity.
